Zinc for Men

The prostate gland is one of the most zinc-rich organs in the body. The zinc it contains has a role in the control of testosterone production. Zinc deficiency is known to reduce the sperm count, and it is said to be one of the many causes of impotence. It can also cause mental lethargy and emotional problems, leading to a loss of libido.

In older men, there is some evidence that adequate zinc intake may help to avoid problems with the prostate gland, including inflammation and infection. These conditions are difficult to treat with orthodox medicine.

Maintenance of good levels of zinc can be more of a problem for men than women because zinc is needed for the sperm to swim towards the egg for fertilization and so is lost on ejaculation. For this reason, the recommended intake level is higher than for women.
